If there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that being loved feels good. But what about when you show yourself some love? Your mental wellbeing doesn't have to come at a cost and it's actually really easy to indulge in some much needed self-care. Here are 5 simple acts that you can do that don't cost a thing!
Write yourself a Love Letter
Look, we get it - it sounds silly. But trust me when I tell you, it's actually one of the sweetest things you can do for yourself. I bet you rarely think about all the positive traits you have and compliment yourself for them right? Now is the time! Take a moment to reflect on all your qualities and write them out. Imagine you were writing to someone that you loved dearly (except that person is YOU) and don't be afraid to shower yourself in admiration. Keep it in a spot that's sacred to you and go back to read it during times when you really need a reminder of how unique and special you are. You are probably your biggest critique and this letter will make you vulnerable in ways that you can't imagine but will truly be one of the best gifts you can give yourself.
Move your Body
One of the best things you can do for yourself is movement - whether that's through yoga, dance, hiking, or just taking a walk around your neighborhood. Get your blood flowing and your energy level will thank you. Whenever I feel in a slump or unmotivated, I get my body moving and it always helps to reset my mood. No matter what physical abilities you have, even small movements can have huge benefits. So turn on your favorite tunes and show your body how much you love it by getting out there and moving it!
Meditate, Meditate, Meditate
If you're like me, you probably want to just skip right past this one and move onto the next. Trust me when I say - I GET IT. I've always been one of those people that thought meditation is not for me. But to that point, if you are one of those people - meditation is exactly what you need. It sounds intimidating but it doesn't need to be. Even taking 5 minutes to sit with your thoughts is so much better than not doing it all. Meditation is about being in the present and being mindful. Find a quiet spot to sit, get comfortable and close your eyes. You can think about a place that makes you happy, and just let yourself start to relax. Even if your thoughts start to wonder, just notice that and bring it back to the present moment. It's really that simple and the calming effects it will have on you are truly amazing. If you are new to meditation or it seems scary, there are tons of free resources and guided meditations online that make it super simple to get started!
Take Yourself on a Date
Okay this one might sound a little cheesy but if you really want to show yourself some love, take yourself on a date! And this doesn't mean you need money to do this. Taking yourself on a free date could look like taking a walk along the beach or in the city while listening to your favorite tunes or podcast. It could look like cooking yourself a delicious dinner while watching your favorite movie. Or it could be drinking a glass of wine and taking a bubble bath. No matter what you choose to do, make sure you do it solo and that includes being unplugged from your phone! Block off an hour or two to fully focus on yourself and show yourself the love you deserve.
Give Yourself some Grace
Look, showing yourself love on the daily can be hard. However, even the smallest acts can improve your mood. Give yourself some grace if you're feeling overwhelmed, upset or just generally in a bad mood. It's so easy to get wrapped up in the negativity that we are faced with each day. If we can let go, forgive ourselves, or allow ourselves space then we are giving ourselves what we really need - a little self love that makes a huge difference in our lives. So next time you're feeling down, let yourself soak that in and feel your emotions and listen to what you need. Maybe it's a walk or a good cry or a bowl of ice cream. Whatever that looks like for you - it's okay. Remember that you're human and just take a moment to show yourself some kindness.
